About The Old Hay Barn
Within its original sandstone walls are stored many memories – ‘good harvest’, ‘bad harvest’; laughter, joy, sadness, tears and many secrets and thoughts…
It still stands as originally built all those 300 years ago.
From being stocked floor to rafters with hay, firstly loose hay brought in by horse and cart to small mechanically bailed hay, filling the barn to bursting point. Then … along came new technology, huge big round bales and huge tractors. The big barn doors and old oak floors groaned with the size and weight of them and the big tractor trying to turn and twist in the space.
The old hay barn was becoming redundant, it’s big doors rarely opened the odd big bale or junk! It silently stood half-empty. Not even sounds of the cows being milked underneath from the Shippon, as they, too, had been moved out into a new big cow shed. Times were changing and diversification had to bring about new energy and purpose for the beautiful old barn.
